Every year, fall comes around, and a lot of things are present with it. For example: cold weather, colored leaves, horror movies and, pumpkins. Pumpkins in fall bring carving, spice, and worst of all… pumpkin pie. Ever since I was a little girl, I have hated pumpkin pie.
I was just four years old, and my father decided it was time for me to try different types of pie at Thanksgiving. First, I tried caramel apple and I loved it; it was so gooey and just amazing! Next, I tried my aunt’s famous Reese’s pie, and my life changed at that moment. It was like a slice of heaven in my mouth, still my favorite pie to this day. Then, it was time to try pumpkin pie. Of course, little me was excited because the other two pies were amazing, so this one would be too..? WRONG. The second I put the spoon in my mouth I felt repulsed. Still, I decided to chew so I did not offend my grandma who put a LOT of hard work into making the pie. 3 chews in, I HAD to spit it out. Yuck! It was so nasty and smelled like a rotten vegetable. Now – I have tried it since then, and I still don’t like it. The texture, the color, just everything!
It might be the worst thing I’ve tasted, and trust me when I say I’m not the only one who thinks that. Freshmen Madi Hiles and Harmony Greico when asked said similar statements.
“It’s not the greatest, it’s grainy and the cool whip does nothing,” Hiles said. “It just makes it worse,” Greico adds.
The texture is a common denominator in the dislikeness of the pie. Senior Abbi James said the feeling of the pie was the issue for her. What is interesting is that people will say the texture is grainy and almost sand-like, but others will state it is very mushy and runny.
“I do not like it, but that’s because of the texture of it, not very yummy in my tummy,” James said.
Another reason me and a population of our school doesn’t prefer the pie is the “baby food” like taste. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good pumpkin chai latte or muffin but there is just something about pumpkin pie’s taste that is off.
“ It [pumpkin pie] tastes really strange,” sophomore Landon Arlauskas said. “And don’t even get me started on the puree smell, it smells like a vegetable you tried to put sugar in just disgusting.”
Not just our students dislike it, but our faulty chimed in on their opinions of the pie. Blair softball coach Jennifer Fangmeier says “Too much Nutmeg for me, too much spice.” I don’t mind the spices used in pumpkin pie but the taste of the puree is revolting. Everyone interviewed had great opinions on why they don’t like the pie and I agree with them all, but they didn’t state that I hate and it. my least favorite part of the pie is the crust texture when met with the puree. It is truly sickening to me. Overall, I hate everything about pumpkin pie, and it always makes me wince at the sight of it at Thanksgiving, but the people I spend the holiday with, who just love the pie, make it tolerable.
