In 2024, a boundary-breaking movie was made starring Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore; The Substance. The Substance is about an aerobics show host, Elizabeth Sparkle, who is aging out of her prime. On her 50th birthday, her boss fires her, she is unemployed and feels hopeless. Until, she gets an offer of a lifetime. One injection is all it takes to clone a glamorous, younger, better version of yourself. Rules? You must respect the balance: every other week you are back to your old self, not a second more or there will be consequences. You have to make sure you stabilize your other self. Lastly, remember you are one.
I watched this movies and read many reviews of it. This movie was one of few that have truly disturbed me, but in a weird way I ended up truly loving it. It highlights female beauty standards in and out of Hollywood and how “being perfect” isn’t always as it seems. Both actresses did a phenomenal job at portraying their roles. Margaret portraying Sue as young, eager, tempting, beautiful and Demi as Elizabeth feeling old, tired, and overworked. This movie takes boundaries and pushes them to the next level.
Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a 89% and commented, “Audaciously gross, wickedly clever, and possibly Demi Moore’s finest hour, The Substance is a gasp-inducing feat from writer-director Coralie Fargeat.”
If you are a horror movie buff and aren’t scared of a little (and by little I mean a lot) of gore; this is definitely a movie I would recommend.
