I was thankful that I was able to meet a friend to attend a movie, and we attended a screening of the new A24 film “The Drama”. A24 is an entertainment company known for releasing films with striking stories filmed from unique points of view. A24 is behind the making of movies like “Hereditary”, “Marty Supreme”, “Midsommar”, and the hit show “Euphoria”. I am personally not a big fan of horror films, but before seeing A24’s newest film, I expected it to contain intense scenes, ones that contain a lot of sound, quick-flashing scenes, or high-strung emotional interaction between characters. What could be so scary about a film that follows a couple who are about to get married?
“The Drama”, directed by Kristoffer Borgli, is described as a romantic psychological thriller that uses dark comedy as the plot unravels. “The Drama” follows Emma and Charlie, an engaged couple who are played by Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Zendaya, and worldwide-recognized actor Robert Pattinson. Emma and Charlie have an interesting meet-cute, a memorable first kiss, and share a beautiful apartment together. One question about the couple remains: how much do they really know about each other? After a night of drinking with their best friends, Rachel and Mike, played by Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie, things take a turn for the worse. When both couples decide to share the worst thing they’ve ever done with the group, and Emma says something she can’t unsay, tension between Emma and Charlie plans to stick around.
“The Drama” took turns with its comedy that I never would have expected. The comedy is what made this movie enjoyable for me. The timing of different dialogues and sounds made the acting performances that much more enjoyable. The way this film specifically uses the element of sound to create higher emotion was very impressive. I could feel the emotions and rising tension through the screen. The cinematography was also outstanding. I’ve seen A24’s unique ways of filming in the past, and I was more than impressed with what I saw in “The Drama”.
I think they also did really well when it came to casting for this film. Zendaya is phenomenal in any role she’s given, and the performance she gave as Emma was really well done for how the character was written. Robert Pattinson as Charlie was hilarious to watch. Pattinson is great when it comes to characters who are slowly freaking out and characters who become stressed throughout the film. Alana Haim as Rachel was really well done, due to how well she can play such an insufferable character. Even with a smaller role, Mamoudou Athie did a great job playing Mike. Every character delivered great dialogue and emotions.
“The Drama” is a film unlike any you’ll see in 2026. A24’s films can bring a story with a certain style that takes some getting used to, but their company delivers a movie experience that’s hard to forget. “The Drama” is a film I will not be forgetting any time soon, and I think it’s worth any movie-goer’s time.
