If you grew up in Nebraska, there’s a chance that you’ve visited Omaha’s famous Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium before. Henry Doorly has millions of visitors each year, and is a three time consecutive winner for the award of “Best Zoo”. Henry Doorly is one of the top visit spots for families and visitors of Nebraska, and the zoo is always finding ways to make improvements and more room for animals of all kinds. Henry Doorly usually always has new things happening, so what is the current news of our beloved zoo and aquarium?
Sadly Henry Doorly is mourning the loss of the giraffe Zola, who was beloved by her herd, the staff, and visitors of the zoo. Zola dealt with chronic health issues, and the decision to humanely euthanize her was made by the staff as the best thing for her declining health. Zola will be missed by many. Even as a giraffe, Zola was very artistic. While living at Henry Doorly, Zola made 470 paintings since 2017, and raised $20,000.
Henry Doorly is also experiencing the joy of having some new additions to the zoo. In late October, Henry Doorly announced that Ruby, a 26 year old Bornean orangutan is expecting her first child. Ruby will welcome her baby in early 2026, and is currently living with Denda, the baby’s father. Henry Doorly is very excited, and is sure to update fans and visitors through their social media and website.
According to Henry Doorly’s website, in August, the zoo welcomed four new additions. The four new members of the zoo are spider monkeys who were rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking. The spider monkeys traveled through many zoos to get the healthcare and support they needed. After a 30 day quarantine, the spider monkeys were welcomed into their new home in the Lied Jungle at Henry Doorly. The spider monkeys are one male and three females, and seem to have done well with adjusting to their new home. You’re able to visit the spider monkeys in their home in the Lied Jungle.
As the holidays are approaching, Henry Doorly loves to create ways for families to participate in festivities while also enjoying the animals at the zoo. This year, Henry Doorly presents its Zoolightful event. The event started on November 19th, and is an all-new holiday experience. The event features many lights around the zoo, along with getting to meet Santa and the Grinch. Zoolightful is open Wednesday-Sundays from 6:30-9.
Much is happening at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, and it’s well worth it to consider visiting soon.
